5 Tips to Beat Sugar Cravings

A week ago, I told you my personal story of letting go of sugar, this story was deep for me because it really woke me up to the fact that I have control over my life now. It really is a gift to be able to reflect and see how far I have come with my health and wellness journey and how well I know my mind/body connection. Reflection is a marvelous thing! I advise all my clients to look back at day one, the day you felt defeated and scared to see the truth of your body measurements, your food diaries and the fact that one push up was out of the question. Going back to that day you decided to commit to your goals is huge! Starting something can be scary, I know this to be true and I am sure you do to but committing is a whole other level and one you have to realize before starting a new project or goal, you have to COMMIT.

A lot of you asked about tongue scraping which is one of five tools I used to beat sugar cravings. I wrote that post and learned that many of you also struggled or still struggle with sugar cravings no matter what you do. I truly give thanks to my acupuncturist who taught me about tongue scraping because it helped me learn more about my body as a whole and helped me learn how detoxing those taste buds makes a big difference.

What The Heck is a Tongue Scraper?

A tongue scraper is a stainless steel device that scrapes bacteria, food debris, toxins and dead cells from the surface of your tongue. This is a practice in Ayurvedic medicine (Eastern medicine) and is used to help one rid of cravings, understand how the body digests certain foods and help you to bring more awareness within yourself.

Let me explain a bit how it works, you begin every morning with a delicate tongue scraping and analyze the results. Scrape your tongue, I show you how in the video below, look at the saliva and smell it, yes smell it. Does it smell like last nights pasta? That means your body hasn’t fully digested it yet, if there is a thick coating that means there is a lot of toxins floating around your system. This could be from drinking the night before, eating late at night or eating a meal that was fried, sugar coated and difficult for your body to digest. After that analysis you can see how eating a high carb breakfast might not be a good idea, if your body is having a hard time with digesting the day before’s meals, maybe a fresh smoothie with less than five ingredients is more beneficial for you.

Benefits of Tongue Scraping Ayurveda:

  • Eliminates Bad Breathe: Trust me when I say, you are literally removing bad breathe. When I meet someone, I can immediately tell how well they eat nutrition wise by the way the breathe smells. Weird I know, but a lot of people who think they eat well and eat processed protein bars and shakes tend to have stinky breathe and gas. This is because these foods aren’t digested well. As much as I love a quick protein bar and the ease of a shake, filling your diet with more whole foods is a better option and easier for your body to digest in the long run.
  • Helps Control Cravings: Removing the taste buds that do not serve us helps us to see why and when we crave certain foods. If you eat a lot of processed foods late at night those cravings will linger on your tongue and taste buds causing you to crave more sugar and junk food. Removing these taste buds will eliminate this urge.
  • Digestion: As you remove the dead cells and bacteria your body sends signals to all the internal organs and stimulates gastric fire and digestive enzymes. Our digestive systems work as a unit and if one organ is not properly working it can throw off everything which is why many people experience gas, bloating or indigestion problems.

How Do I Use a Tongue Scraper?:

It can be quite difficult to explain and I really didn’t feel like taking photos of myself with my tongue hanging out so I made this quick little video tutorial of exactly how to use it.

Do at least 7-14 strokes and clean off your scraper after your analysis with warm water.
