4 Tips to Be More Productive in the AM

I used to hate mornings. I can say the word hate because I meant it back then, I really really disliked getting up before 9 AM and saw no reason to be up and ready to roll before that time. When I got certified to be a personal trainer back in 2008, I had to take the shifts no one wanted and work my way up which meant I had to be up at 4 AM to be ready to teach and motivate a group of girls to move and groove before there work day began. This was completely difficult and I soon relied heavily on coffees and pre workouts to keep me energized and ready to go! Who sips pre workout at 4 AM to teach class? ME! After a good three months of 4 AM wake up calls, I soon realized that being up before the rest of the world was a blessing in disguise and 7 years later I LOVE being up before the sun! 

This soon became the norm even after I went off on my own and started my own personal training business and continues on to this day. I don’t drink anything but water until about 7-7:30 AM and leave my house at 5:30 AM with a huge smile and excitement for the day to begin. Granted 5:30 is not 4 AM but I could pull a 4 AM’r with that same smile. It took me a few years to develop a routine but after reading a book about a man who started a million dollar business just because he started the day before 5 AM I realized that my work starting at this time was actually a blessing in disguise. So while I am a huge advocate of sleeping 6-8 hours every night, switching off the lights by 10 PM and rising before the sun has become one of the highlights of my day.

  • Get up and Move: Every morning I wake up whether it be dark or a little peep form the sun I say thank you! This little bit of gratitude and look at the beauty of our Earth gives me a thrill and appreciation! After that I move my lymphatic system by dry brushing. Remember when I mentioned I had to down coffee and pre workouts to wake up and now all I need is water? Dry brushing is the reason I am able to skip all of that. I love dry brushing, it revs my body, gives me tingles because it stimulates nerve endings in the skin and assists in improving vascular blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. It is also said to help shed dead skin cells, encourage new cell renewal and encourages the body’s discharge of waste and helps rid of cellulite.

How to Start Your Morning Happy

  • Journal with Love + Gratitude: I used to meditate and wish I could continue this practice but it just hasn’t worked for me in recent years. Lately I write in a journal and say a handful of very specific gratitudes for the people and things I have in my life. I also write my hope for the day whether it be to finalize the name for my next project or just simply to spend my day smiling I set it down on paper. Doing this every morning really sets the mood for my day. When you fill your heart with love and gratitude the people you encounter, the experiences you enjoy all come to light.
  • Eat That Frog: You know that bullet point on your to do list that always gets pushed to the next day and the next day and the next? Well its time to bite the bullet + get that task out of the WAY by doing it FIRST THING in the morning! Brian Tracey’s book entitled “Eat That Frog” changed the way I tackle my to do list. Instead of taking on the easiest task of my day “share my blog on social media,” I start with the hardest most daunting task that I need to complete. Once you get that out of the way the rest of your to do list becomes easier + you get that nasty task outta the way!

How to Be More Productive in the AM

  • Pick a Daily Mantra:  Decide on a phrase that powers you up and stick to it. I usually reach down touch my toes then reach for the sky and repeat a phrase like :I am fearless: and bring it down to my heart! Not only does this stretch me out for the day it reminds me to repeat this phrase throughout the day to keep my mojo going! Whenever a negative thought crosses my path I will say whatever mantra I picked for that day to squash it down. My mantras change daily but I can personally say that affirmations have kick started me and brought me out of a funk whenever times get rough! It may sound cheesy, corny whatever but it totally works! It’s kinda one of those fake it till you make it kinda deals but it works!

Because I practice these 4 steps every single morning my days are more productive because I have an end goal for each and everyday. My energy radiates through me and I constantly get asked how in the world I have SO much energy and truth be told this is WHY. Sure, coffee helps but without it I would be just fine too!
