Living in Asia for over 8 months I have learned a thing or FOUR about new foods to add to my arsenal of nutritious and delicious foods. One food that I have known about for years but was to afraid to touch was Agar Agar. I knew it was used in most Vegan Jello’s, but my initial understanding was that it was processed so I avoided it at all costs. Now it is somewhat processed as the combination of seaweeds is a little confusing to me, but with a high fiber count and low calorie nutrient value I was sold.
Agar Agar, also known as Kanteen is used as an appetite suppressant and contains 80% FIBER. Talk about a FIBER LICIOUS food..with. 2 tbsp. = 3 CALORIES, 0 FAT + 0.7 Carbohydrates you are such to enjoy Agar Agar on a daily basis. It is also free from starch, soy, corn, gluten, yeast, wheat, milk, egg and preservatives, so vegans, here is your new favorite treat 🙂
What makes Agar Agar so freakin amazing is its ability to absorb glucose from the stomach and pass through the digestive system so QUICKLY it grabs all that crud, including excess fat and pushes it out the waste side. Agar also absorbs bile and helps the body dissolve more cholesterol.

How TO Use AGAR AGAR:
- Agar MUST be dissolved first in a base liquid. Most of the time I either use almond milk or water. I have used green tea in the past for a green tea pudding which was tasty tasy! After letting your agar agar flakes dissolve in your choice of liquid for at least 5 minutes, place it on the stove top until it boils, then let it simmer.
- Follow the package instructions if there are any but most do not have any so just be sure to write down this basic recipe: 2 tbsp. agar agar flakes to 2 + 2/3 liquid.
- Once the agar has simmered for at least 5 minutes, let it cool down then place it in the fridge. After about 10-15 minutes your agar agar should firm up and look as photoed below..OOEY GOOEY!
SIDE NOTE: You have to add flavor, there is 0 flavor and the texture may creep you out if you do not add something to sweeten the deal. I enjoy peanut butter and since I am lowering my macro fat content I have been using powdered peanut butter as of late.
